René Rivard,Artist
Curriculum
René received his BA in Fine Arts from L’École des Beaux-Arts de l’Université du Québec à Montréal. He has also studied diverse techniques and mediums: sculpture, ceramics, theatre design, textiles and Sumi-E in various colleges and universities. He has also been active in the fields of social work and research, more specifically in mental health and deafness.
His “abstract landscapes” in acrylic on canvas are all created from sketches and photographs of real landscapes. Other obligations reduced his artistic production for many years but, as of a few years, he has been producing more intensely, mostly acrylic on canvas and woodblock prints.
In order to make woodblock prints, the image is reversed and reproduced on a block on wood that will be the printing surface. The block is carved in low-relief leaving the raised surface of the image to be printed. The block is inked and the image is transferred to rice paper. The same block is used for all the colours and, with the successive carvings for each colour, may never be re-used. Thus the number of copies produced is very limited (20-30), each being numbered (print number over total number of prints) and signed.
